    great.. r u moving the master controller here?! im struggling to find out if i need to move the master controller for a game animation. and if u do move it.. how can u prevent the sliding thing.. not on walk cycles only but in the while animation.

    • @JasonShum
      @JasonShum 3 года назад

      Hi Ibrahim, I do move the master controller. To prevent sliding I use locators and match them to the feet and it's kind of a messy process that's better to show than explain. Creating a video for that would be on my todo list but probably not able to do that video anytime soon unfortunately.

    I know what I'll be doing after summer school ends in 1 week! Thanks for these tutorials Jason, a friend of mine just shared them with me, as I'm trying to learn more about 3D animation in games and films. :)

  • @JoshLange3D
    @JoshLange3D 4 года назад

    Thanks for setting this up Jason. I'm late to the party, but I really enjoyed this. My summary: Rick's backstory: loved games like Street Fighter when he was a kid. Never wanted to get into film, but when he saw Toy Story he knew it would be the next big thing. Went to SCAD to get a 3D art degree, but back then the program didn't teach much. He used the SGI machine on his first job to make his first short film, which really got his animation career started. Rose through ranks as a gameplay animator for shooters. Years later, the chance to handle animation for Polyarc opened up, which he took because VR is clearly the next exciting frontier for animation like 3D was for games 18 years ago. Understanding the context of button presses is key for optimal gameplay. If someone presses attack when standing, they will expect something different than when whey press attack when moving in a direction. This can be tough to predict as a developer, so lots of attention and care must be paid. Workflow: World space has proven to be the best space for animating. Your axes aren't offset and things behave how you intuitively expect them. He emphasizes the importance of staying in the posing stage longer than you feel it might be needed or are comfortable doing, in order to avoid Maya dictating too much of your tweening. Likens Maya to like the lower-level Disney in-between animator for the nine old men. His tools automate jiggling body parts whereas before in his career he'd keyframe it. This jiggle style helps players read the action that took place. Use illustration techniques (positive/negative space, relatable and appealing lines of action in different body parts) to get golden poses. If your pose reads from the front and side ortho views, it will read in all others. At this point in his career, he relies more on comic books or game reference for Moss, less so for real-life. Maya/DCC is only step ONE of many steps to get your animation in its final format in-game. Make sure it looks good in Maya first, but then you need to be there, talk to other departments, and understand your game engine to ensure it looks its best. For example, know how your engine hooks up bone rotations, how it blends between animations, how state machines work, etc. If you and an engineer disagree on how to hook up your animation, you can use layers in Maya to previs how you think it would look best in-game, and pitch it. Not all animators can be good gameplay animators because gameplay feel can be a tough concept to get. To be a good gameplay animator, understand people, psychology, how the brain works, and how people perceive the world. The longer it takes for the character's animation to respond to a button press, the less satisfying for the player. As a golden rule, the animation must meet the player's expectations. Antics must generally be short, and the momentum should have continuity with the player's navigation (running, turning, running should all match velocity). Demo reel tips: be aware of all the peaks and valleys (levels) of your music and match them to the energy of your animation clips. Shots go by quickly, so consciously draw the viewer's eye around the frame from shot to shot by matching the spaces on cut points. Reel length is arbitrary, and you'll be judged by your worst shot. It's a crowded industry right now, so you can distinguish yourself, find underrepresented types of animation that the industry needs (first person, navigation sets). Maybe avoid cutting together clips and instead show them transitioning from one to the next in-game (blending between samples, in & out of idles, walk/run to actions, show how aim screens work with navigation samples). Jump at chances to animate things that are unique to your portfolio, use a unique rig, that you don't see in reels. Avoid the "talking heads" shot that you see everywhere (Jason: the "guy behind a desk" shot). Giving up on getting hired is a personal choice. Some people will be relentless, others might have alternative options. Ask yourself "what am I doing (or not doing) that has made it so I'm still looking?" Look at what others are doing in their reels and what you are doing in your reel or interviews, and start rectifying it. Don't be self-defeatist, just turn it internal and start fixing the differences between yourself and the people that get the jobs. There will be other factors of course, like companies doing layoffs at the same time, or maybe your location is too far away, but if you fix the differences your odds go up and as you fix each weakness you get better and better.

    Hi! Can I ask how do you work when exporting these in to engine? are animation made this way just for pratice? i thought they all had to be on the spot? or if a combo it make to cycle do you cut them up after you get the full idea of energy and style? I'm an ok student animator looking in to game anim for a solo project so just trying to understand this process

    • @JasonShum
      @JasonShum 4 года назад

      Hi Tammy, I replied in DM but posting it here as well if anyone else was interested: I tend to animate combos differently for demo reels. I don’t care about staying at origin or anything like that, I just make it cool. If I was doing it for games I would be focused on how many units it needs to move and shaving frames off the antic and settles. So yeah I treat them differently since demo reel is all about presentation. Hope that helps!
